Jesus said that we are "the salt of the earth".

What did Jesus mean when He said we should be the salt of the earth?

Salt (NaCl) is a natural mineral composed mainly of two elements, sodium and chlorine.  Unrefined salt contains over 80 natural minerals that are really necessary for our lives.

God's children are like salt of the earth.  What are the ways we are like salt?

A. Salt provides us with numerous minerals that are essential for our health and God's people provide the world with assistance in obtaining the Kingdom of Heaven.

-We must be poor in spirit, so that we can fill the world with the love of God.

-We must be hungry and thirsty for righteousness, so that we can feed the world with God’s word.

B.  Salt flavors food and we season the world:

-We must be patient, so that we can make the world fruitful.

-We must be merciful, so that we make the world thankful

-We must be the peacemakers, so that we can make the world peaceful (Don’t confuse “peacemaker” with “peacekeeper”.  When Jesus saw the people buying and selling the animals for their own good in the temple, He drove them out and knocked over the tables. If Jesus wanted to keep the peace, He’d have remained silent but Jesus was angry to make real peace. Sometimes we must fight for peace. Making peace doesn't simply mean not fighting.  We could enjoy real peace by inviting Jesus into our heart and having Him make our heart peaceful)

-We must be persecuted because of righteousness, so that we can make the world joyful.

C.  Salt is used to preserve food and we keep the world from spoiling:

-We cry out to God for the world because our sincere prayers keep this world from spoiling.  If we don’t pray, our world goes bad.

-We must be pure in heart so the world can see God.  Sins separate us from God and make the world rotten.  When we repent our sins, God will forgive us our sins and the blood of Jesus can make us clean and pure.
