Do you respect God?
2 Kings 2:23-24
God decided to take Elijah, the great prophet of God, to heaven. Most people go to heaven by dying but God had different plan for this man. When Elijah was taken into heaven, he dropped his cloak down to Elisha, the faithful disciple and the successor of Prophet Elijah. This Elijah’s cloak was so important to Elisha because it represents the great prophet’s authority. As Elisha requested, he received double portion of Elijah’s spirit. He prophesied and preached the word of God and performed twice as many miracles as his teacher Elijah did proving the Spirit of God rested upon him.
One day, prophet Elisha visited the city of Bethel expecting to meet the people who would come out to praise God for his appearance in the city. However, even little children in that city were so mean and hateful. They were mocked him by saying “Go up, you bold head! Go up, you bold head!” They might have thought it was funny to make fun of God’s prophet but Elisha does not think it was funny. Elisha cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two very angry and ferocious bears came out of the wood and killed 42 children who did not respect prophet of God.
Lesson: We learned one very important lesson from this awful story. We learned how important it is to respect God. We may tell whether or not we respect God by answering the following questions: Do you like to come to church? Do you respect worship and services of God? Do you respect the people who teach you about God? If your answer is YES, you are showing respect for God.
If we respect God, we must respect worship and services of God. If we respect God, we must respect preacher of God and the people who teach us about God. If we respect God, we must like to come to church and pay close attention to every word spoken at church.
Everything in the Bible is true, but not everything is equally important. Respecting God is one of the most important things that we must do. It doesn’t matter how old we are. Even little children must learn to respect God so that we can worship God rightly.
