This Sunday our lesson was taken from the story in 2 Kings 5:1-17 where we could meet a guy named Naaman.  Let's see how he came to know the true God and how his life was changed.

Naaman was the commander of the army of Syria.  He was highly regarded and had favor with King of Syria because by him the Lord had given great victories to Syria, BUT he had leprosy.  Leprosy was a very serious and bad sickness that causes body tissue to die or decay and makes body parts to fall off.

God used a servant girl to give Naaman an opportunity to meet God’s prophet

Meanwhile, Naaman’s wife heard a good news from her little servant girl from Israel.  We don’t know much about her but she had faith in God and shared what she had known about God’s prophet, Elisha, with her mistress. Because she willingly and bravely spoke up about the prophet of God, Naaman was given an opportunity to meet God’s prophet, Elisha.

God used servants of Naaman to give Naaman an opportunity to experience the grace of God.

When Naaman and his servants arrived at Elisha’s house, Elisah didn’t even come out of his house to meet him.  He simply sent his messenger to tell Naaman to wash seven times in the Jordan.  What a ridiculous instruction! Naaman became so furious and refused to follow Elisha’s simple, easy, but ridiculous instruction because it sounded so rude and silly to him.  When Naaman about to start back to Syria in a rage, his servants gave him wise counsel at this point, saying “You would do it if this prophet had come to you and told you to do something hard. Then why not do this little thing and be cured of your leprosy?”  Naaman took their advice and obeyed Elisha’s direction by dipping his body into the Jordan.  Finally God cured his leprosy when he came out of the Jordan river the seventh time. Because Naaman’s servant encouraged him to follow Elisha’s instruction, Naaman was given an opportunity to experience the grace of God.

God used Prophet Elisha to teach Naaman that we must worship and praise God alone.

Naaman and his servants went to Elisha to give him the gifts he had brought but Elisha refused to receive because Elisha wanted Naaman and his servants to know it was God alone who cured Naaman’s leprosy.

Lesson:

We have learned the following lessons from this true story:  1. Like a little servant girl, we must share what we know about God with people needing Jesus. (“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Jesus shall not perish but have eternal life.”).  2. As the servants of Naaman did, we must encourage one another to obey God’s word.(Jesus said, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength and all your mind’ and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’”). 3. As Elisha did, we must give God full credit for things God has done for us.
